This is for all of those kind-hearted folks on DA who wished me a happy birthday!
So...
Sketch --------------
When you start of with your sketch it should be a be at least showing what you want the line art to look like. People here on DA tell you that "it doesn't have to be perfect" but that's a lie. It depends on you. Draw what you know you'll need to see when you start on the line art. Keepin it simple is perfect(because its a sketch) but put what you need!
(Don't take three hours on your sketch) -------------- Line Art --------------
Now heres the part that(in my opinion) makes up the whole picture. If you don't have good line art, then your picture isn't gunna look as good as you want it to be. A very special person on DA once told me that you need to have thickness in your lines. They all can't be the same. That's what gives your picture depth! Also , you need to know if all your lines are connected. So use the select tool and press the outside of your line art and see if the whole canvas goes blue,except for the inside of the drawing. -------------- Base Colors --------------
Now on this step, i claim it to be extremely simple. Place your base colors(main colors) under the line art. EACH COLOR HAS A DIFFERENT LAYER. -------------- Blush -------------- Now, when using SAI you have a certain thing you can do to keep within your base colors. "Preserve Opacity" is ALWAYS my first choice.
(I usually start with the Skin.) -------------- Eyes/Mouth -------------- When working with your eyes, you always wanna keep within your color range. As you can see, i had a more redish-brown going on so what i did was go up on the color bar.Whats lighter than red and brown? YELLOW! (I'll explain later why the finished product's eyes have no yellow in them).
Doing the mouth, i actually do it on the skin layer! ------------- Hair/ETC. ------------- Ok, so here comes the fun part! The HAIR!! Now doing the hair, you should always choose the darker shade when working the hair. Shadows,Highlights...Thats the order i go in. What i do is picture pieces of hair instead of drawing it in the Lineart layer. (I'm always a step ahead of myself).Then after , i start puting the shades in the right places and then let the base color start working out the pieces of hair it's self! ------------- Highlights ------------- Adding your highlights are also a funway to finsh your artwork. As you see in the picture, i wanted my light to come from the left! Always have your sunlight's position in mind! (Sometimes i forget that!) ------------- DONE! In this step, i added another layer , Overlay, and played with the hue,contrast, light, anything to make the picture shine or make it look extremely finsihed! Play around and see what you come up with!!
If you have ANY questions about any of these steps, please! Do not hesitate to ask! I'll answer right away to the best of my ability!! Thank you so much for looking!!
I usually go between tools. My pen tool and my brush tool. lol i can never keep track, but i know for this one i used the pen tool for my line art. After that i used the brush tool to smooth out the lines(steps 6-7)! Gosh i hope i answered your question correctly ;u;
Do you use a tablet pen to do your lineart, or a paths tool/lineart? If you're using a pen for that, then asdfghgsa you have extremely steady hands. ; A ;
